The Public Option and the Hope of Health Care Reform | The American Prospect

This is an article written by Paul Waldman for the THE AMERICAN PROSPECT that has the best explanation available on what the public option is, and what it will and will not do.

Please note that this article is more than 10 months old (December 23, 2008), obviously written before the new Congress and President Obama were sworn into office. Foretelling the opposition to the public option by insurance companies and their (mainly) Republican allies in Congress, Mr. Waldman is a Cassandra in painting a picture of the situation we have today.

Also note the advertisements on the page, obviously paid for by insurance companies and their minions, depicting reform as "Obamacare", doing their share to marginalize the reform movement and to de-legitimize a presidency.
