Astro_Mike's One Giant TWEET For Mankind

There probably isn't anybody in the blogesphere who hasn't heard or read the news of Astronaut Mike Massimino being the first person to send a message on TWITTER from outer space. Astro_Mike sent this first message from the shuttle ATLANTIS at 4:33 PM yesterday (May 12).
From orbit: Launch was awesome!! I am feeling great, working hard, & enjoying the magnificent views, the adventure of a lifetime has begun!

Mike followed up with this message about ten hours ago.

From orbit: Getting more accustomed to living in space today and getting ready for our big rendezvous with hubble

And yes, some may laugh at an astronaut using TWITTER from space. But after reading his messages in my TWITTER home page all I could do is say ..."Wow".

We are living Star Trek, in a manner of speaking. I'm old enough to remember listening to the space launch of Alan Shepard, way back when. On RADIO in elementary school! TV news coverage was still very primitive- the first communications satellite, TELESTAR, was still a couple of years away. When space travel began most people couldn't watch it on TV, and the status of the person sent into orbit (or sub-orbit) was unknown except to those he was communicating with in the command center.

And now, almost 50 years later, an astronaut in flight is sending messages to his 250 thousand+ followers on TWITTER. Individual citizens getting the straight story, in 140 characters or less.

Its so very cool.

And really, really, amazing.
