Ashes to Ashes Update; Episode 2

If you're one of the multitudes who follow this blog religiously...well, shame on you! Nothing better to do on a Sunday morning, huh?

Anyway, as you know I'm a huge fan of the cancelled (ABC version of ) LIFE ON MARS, and have become hooked on the BBC sequel to LOM, Ashes to Ashes. Last night's second episode followed "time traveler" Alex Drake (Keeley Hawes) during the week of the Royal Wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981, and danger from protesters. After a bombing in London, and the targeting of millionaire Danny Moore as the next victim, Alex is drawn into a scenario where she finds herself wooed by Moore, and meeting up with the 1981 version of her own mother, Caroline Price (Amelia Bulmore), a barrister representing a suspect. In an amusing segment, Alex was getting her buttocks stamped by the crew at police headquarters (in an initiation ceremony) when Caroline Price walks in....upon seeing her for the first time Alex's mutters "Mummy!" to the baffled attorney.

As usual, the show mixes a police procedural drama with science fiction and comedy. Philip Glenister is comically neanderthal as usual as Gene Hunt. Keeley Hawes is his perfect foil, sexy and witty, stoic but never tragic in her plight. In fact, she seems to embrace the situation of being trapped in 1981- its her illusion she reckons, so she damned well has a right to enjoy it.

And we enjoy her enjoying it.
